Horseback Trail Rides

SouthFork Lodge is proud to partner with
Wild West Horse Adventures

SouthFork Lodge is proud to partner with Wild West Horse Adventures to offer private horseback riding experiences through the iconic Sawtooth Mountains. This isn’t a large-group trail ride — it’s your own personalized adventure, designed for guests looking to slow down, explore the mountains, and experience Idaho from the saddle.

Ride through quiet forest trails, mountain meadows, river crossings, and hidden backcountry landscapes with experienced wranglers who know the area well. Whether you’re an experienced rider or simply looking for a unique way to experience the forest, each ride is tailored to your group and pace.

What to Expect:

  • By-appointment only—book in advance to guarantee availability.

  • Breathtaking scenery of the Boise National Forest, seen from a timeless perspective.

  • Trail options range from peaceful meanders to half-day mountain adventures.

  • Perfect for couples, families, and photographers looking to experience the forest at a slower pace.

Wild West Horse Adventures provides all the horses, gear, and guides—you provide the sense of wonder. Rides are available in spring, summer, and fall (sorry, horses take winters off!).

Want to Ride?

SouthFork guests can book directly through Wild West Horse Adventures by calling (623) 824-1947 to reserve your ride and begin your Boise National Forest adventure.

See the forest the way it’s always been seen—on horseback.

Frequently Asked Questions – Private Horseback Adventures

  • Reservations are required. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance to ensure availability.

  • Private rides only. Each ride is tailored to your group and experience level — this is your adventure, not a large public trail ride.

  • We can accommodate up to 10 riders at one time. Groups larger than 6 riders require an additional wrangler, so advance notice for larger parties is appreciated.

  • Our wranglers have a minimum of 3 years of guiding experience and are CPR and First Aid certified.

  • Guests should arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled departure time.

  • Children must be 6 years or older to ride. Double riding is not permitted. Helmets are available for all riders, and required for children ages 6–14.

  • Cancellation Policy: Full refunds are available up to 72 hours before the scheduled ride. Within 72 hours, guests may receive a gift certificate for future use. Gift certificates are non-refundable and valid for one year from the original ride date.

  • Water and trail mix are provided on all rides. Small personal items such as jackets, cameras, sunglasses, and phones may be stored in saddle bags as space allows. Backpacks are not permitted. If anyone in your party has a peanut allergy, please notify us in advance.

  • Guests should wear appropriate riding attire, including closed-toe shoes and long pants. Jackets, hats, and sunglasses are recommended. If rain is in the forecast, rain gear is strongly encouraged.

  • Gratuity for your guide is always appreciated.
